During an endurance race — whether a marathon, a granfondo, a trail or a long bike ride — sunscreen stops being a simple morning routine gesture and becomes part of race strategy.
As the hours pass, sweat, friction from clothing and equipment, and continuous sun exposure progressively reduce protection. This is why it's important to know when to apply it, when to reapply it, how to carry it without extra bulk, and which areas of the body are most often forgotten.
The format of the sunscreen can also make a difference: a cream is easy to spread evenly on the skin, and a compact package can be carried without adding significant weight to your kit.

Why sunscreen runs into your eyes during a race

How to reapply cream during a race without losing time
To allow the product to spread evenly and form a protective film on the skin, it is advisable to apply the cream 20-30 minutes before the start. This gives the product time to form a uniform protective film and reduces the risk of removing it immediately when putting on a headband, helmet, backpack or other technical gear.
Reapplication, on the other hand, should not be improvised during the race, but planned before the start.

- Apply cream to the back of the neck as well, not just the front of the neck.
- Use a buff or a technical neck gaiter as additional protection, without considering it a substitute for cream on exposed areas.
